Kettle’s On! at Daybrook Baptist Church: A Welcome for All
Every Wednesday morning at Daybrook Baptist Church in Nottingham, a vibrant atmosphere fills the hall as Kettle’s On! opens its doors. Operating from 10:30 to 12:30, this Place of Welcome offers more than just a breakfast; it’s a safe, friendly space where everyone is encouraged to come as they are, connect with others, and enjoy a morning of community and fun.
The story of Kettle’s On! began with the church's Foodbank team, who noticed that many people they served needed a space to connect and chat outside of picking up essentials. Since joining the Places of Welcome network in 2023 and receiving a Near Neighbours micro grant in 2024, "Kettle’s On!" has been able to expand its offerings, providing not only food but also a social lifeline for many attendees.
For participants like Michael, Kettle’s On! has become a highlight of the week. "I used to go to the Foodbank downstairs and they gave me a leaflet about 'Kettle’s On!' Since then, I haven’t missed a week. You can have a good laugh here, play some cards or bingo, and even win a box of chocolates!" Michael now takes pride in running the game Sticky 13's, a role he stepped into after the regular Community Champion needed some time off. The joy of giving back to this supportive community has strengthened his sense of belonging.
Michael’s experience reflects what makes Places of Welcome venues so unique: they’re places where people not only find practical support but also build friendships, share skills, and make meaningful contributions. "I’m not a religious person, but I feel welcome here," Michael shares. "The atmosphere is always warm, people are friendly, and you can have a good chat and fill your belly if you’re hungry."
With breakfast every Wednesday, Kettle’s On! truly exemplifies the ethos of Places of Welcome. It’s a space that fosters connection, comfort, and community—one cup of tea and game of bingo at a time.
